Full Automatic Measurement For Laser Chips At Three Controlled Temperatures

Knowing the behavior of your chips at the actual application temperature can be hard to achieve in a fast speed manufacturing environment. This full automatic tool from Opto System is a masterpiece in integration of machine vision, testing equipment and chip handling know-how. Although it is used for edge emitter laser diodes, it can be custom built for other types of semiconductor chips as well that need efficient testing at different temperatures. The tool automatically picks up the chip from your tape, places it on the first temperature-controlled chuck and performs a full electro-optical characterization before moving it forward to the second chuck where the same set of measurements is performed at a different temperature up to 90°C. The next step is to measure the chip on the third chuck at a new pre-set temperature. In this setup, we offer an option to include temperature measurement capability down to -45°C. To avoid condensation, a dedicated housing and dry air is implemented. In all chucks the measurements include the integral light output power, the spectrum and the electrical properties. You may even set an electron-absorbtion-modulator (EAM) voltage as well for data communication laser types. According to the specified criteria, the laser chips are sorted in different GelPaks or rings. This means you can offer your chips specified at the application temperature because you have tested it.

FAQ

Is it possible to handle larger frames?

The VMS3300 chip tester is designed with a supply table that handles 5″ diameter rings or frames with 175mm inside diameter where to pick up from, but we are happy to discuss a customization for larger frames. Opto System’s tools are often a custom-made design and the we are happy to discuss with you your requirements.

Why is the testing equipment optional?

You may want to use the equipment you are used to work with. We would be happy to either propose an optional testing equipment package or work with you to integrate the testing equipment that you provide us from a third party.

I actually only need to measure the chips at one temperature.

The VMS3300 chip tester is designed with three chucks to measure the same chip three times at three different temperatures but it can be adapted into a different machine setup in which the laser chips are measured in parallel in the three chucks multiplying the throughput. For a simpler machine with just one temperature chuck please check our WMS3100 and the WMS3200 with two chucks. Opto System’s tools are often a custom-made design and the we are happy to discuss with you your requirements.

Can I measure more than three different temperatures?

The VMS3300 is designed for “only” three different temperatures. If your volume is small and this is not something that would happen every time, you can of course re-run the measurement several times with different temperature settings. The temperature adjustment of the measurement chuck is not designed for quick temperature changes and it is not advisable to change the temperature while measuring but only between measurement lots. If you have a lot of volume and will regularly need three or more temperature testing, we recommend to use the option of having as many measurement chucks in a single tool as different temperatures that you need to measure. We will take care of the transfer of the laser bars from one chuck to the other. Opto System has delivered testing machines with as many as 5 chucks until now!
